Some Basic Beliefs

I have been thinking this week about my basic beliefs as a dog trainer and I want to share some with you:

  • Every dog, person and situation is different.
  • Treat the dog and AND the people in a kind way.
  • Try to have more than one (or two or three!) training strategies for any situation.
  • Teach people how canines communicate; it’s a rich language worth knowing.
  • Be honest and have the difficult conversations.
  • Deliver excellent customer service.

That’s pretty much it; the YAYDog! core.

  1. Sounds good! I especially wish more people would learn to understand dog body language a bit better. I think it would go a long ways towards better understanding how our canine friends are feeling and potentially avoiding problems in some situations.

  2. I definitely agree with having more than one strategy for training! You can’t approach every dog the same why they are all different, therefore they should be treated that way and be given more personalized training!

  3. I like your approach. Each animal is so individual and responds differently. I’ve been teaching my kids how to listen to body language on all different animals. Here’s hoping I say it enough and they listen.

  4. Totally agree! All dogs are different and so their training cannot be generic! Thank you for recognizing that.

  5. Sounds like a smart approach. Understanding dogs and how each one is different and then training owners as well as dogs is so important. Kilo the Pug has proved a challenge -he has made slow but good progress with lots of treats, love, and practise since we adopted him 3 years ago.

  6. These are perfect philosophies for dog training! Our trainer always said he was also training us, and he was so right. He was good about trying to explain dog behavior as well.
